Patients with Diabetes are susceptible to diabetes-related eye diseases, the most common of which is diabetic retinopathy. Retinopathy and Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (PDR) can be caused by spikes in blood sugar that result in damage to the retina and vision loss. Early detection is critical for proper treatment.

An epiretinal membrane occurs when a thin layer of scar tissue forms on the macular area of the retina, which can lead to blurry or distorted vision. This condition may also be called a macular pucker, surface wrinkling retinopathy, cellophane maculopathy, or premacular fibrosis.
Macular Hole
A macular hole occurs when vitreous, which surrounds the back of the eye, shrinks and causes a tear in the part of the retina called the macula. A macular hole can cause blurred or distorted vision. Treatment options include surgery called a vitrectomy to repair the retina.
Retinal Detachment or Retinal Tear
The retina is connected to blood vessels by a supportive layer of tissue. Retinal detachment occurs when the tissue separates from the tissue and a partial detachment can cause a retinal tear. This condition is typically painless but will result in sudden vision changes and can result in permanent vision loss if not treated quickly.
Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that causes deterioration of the macula, which is the area at the center of the retina. AMD, which can be characterized as “dry” or “wet”, causes loss of vision in the central field and is a leading cause of blindness in people over 65.
Eye Floaters
Eye floaters, also known as posterior vitreous detachments (PVD), are small dark spots or shapes in the field of vision that are caused by changes in the vitreous, which a gel-like substance surrounding the retina. Floaters are fairly common and although they may be annoying, they typically do not cause pain or vision loss.
Plaquenil is a medication that is used to treat inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, as well as malaria, diabetes, and some heart conditions. This medicine is generally safe, but long-term use can result in retinal toxicity and vision deterioration.

Vitrectomy, also called Pars Plana Vitrectomy, is a surgical procedure in which the eye’s protective gel-like liquid, called vitreous, is replaced with saltwater solution. This procedure may be used to treat diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, a macular hole, certain infections, or complications from cataract surgery.
