At the Fraser Eye Care’s center in Port Huron, our experienced cataract surgeons are dedicated to providing the highest quality of safe, effective vision care. Cataracts are a progressive condition, and while patients may be able to initially correct blurred vision with prescription glasses or contacts, eventually cataract surgery will be needed. Our cataract surgeons are pleased to offer the latest in cataract surgery technology to residents of Port Huron, New Baltimore, Marysville, New Haven, and surrounding communities.
Traditional cataract surgery is an excellent and affordable treatment option for many of our cataracts patients. During this procedure, a standard IOL (intraocular lens) is used to replace the clouded natural lens of the eye. This standard IOL is a monofocal lens, which is designed to correct for distance vision, so patients who struggle with near vision or have certain refractive errors may still need to use corrective eyewear for optimal vision after cataract surgery.
We are proud to offer the very latest in customized laser cataract surgery to our patients in Northeast Michigan. Instead of making manual incisions with a blade, our highly-trained surgeons employ the LenSxⓇ Femtosecond Cataract Laser to create very precise incisions.
We also employ the ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) guidance system during all of our customized cataract surgery procedures. This system gives our surgeons real-time measurements of the patient’s eye to allow for the most precise placement of IOLs and optimized vision correction results.
Yet another way our patients are able to customize their cataract surgery is through the option to use advanced IOLs to replace their eyes’ natural lenses. In traditional cataract surgery, a standard, monofocal IOL is used. This corrects vision damage caused by cataracts, but does not correct certain refractive errors like presbyopia and astigmatism. Through the use of advanced IOLs, we are able to fully customize cataract surgery results, correcting a range of refractive errors so that many of our patients achieve their clearest possible vision without corrective lenses.1
The first step in preparing for cataract surgery is to undergo a thorough examination and diagnosis with one of the experienced ophthalmologists at our Port Huron practice. During this examination, the interior structures of your eyes will be digitally measured and analyzed. You will then undergo visual acuity and refractive testing, which will aid your doctor in diagnosing any visual impairment. Your doctor will then conduct a slit-lamp examination to inspect the internal structures of your eye, followed by a retinal examination that will take place while your eyes are dilated.2
Once you have been diagnosed with cataracts, there is not much you need to do to prepare for your surgery. You may be asked to use special eye drops before your procedure, and should arrive at our office in Port Huron without makeup, creams, or lotions on your face. You will also be asked to arrange transportation for after your cataract surgery.
Cataract surgery takes less than 30 minutes, and you should feel no pain during the procedure. Before surgery, your doctor will apply anesthetic drops to numb your eyes, and you may also be given an oral sedative to help you relax.
To begin the cataract surgery procedure, your surgeon will remove the clouded natural lens of your eye. This will be replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), which will be permanently housed between your iris and pupil.
The incision used during cataract surgery is so small that it will naturally heal, and no sutures will be required. Following your procedure, you will rest comfortably in a recovery area for a few minutes before being released to continue your recovery at home.3
Following cataract surgery, it is possible that you may encounter some mild discomfort during the first few days while your eye heals. This can be eased with over-the-counter medication, and most patients are able to return to their typical daily activities within one week of cataract surgery.
At the Eye Care Center of Port Huron, most of our patients receive dropless cataract surgery where antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications are deposited within the eye by one of our surgeons. This means you won’t need to worry about applying medicated eye drops yourself, making for a more comfortable and convenient recovery process.
